AC Compressor Replacement Cost: Typical Prices and Repair vs Replace
Replacing a residential AC compressor typically costs about $1,500–$4,500 in the US out of warranty, and roughly $1,000–$2,500 when a parts warranty covers the compressor itself. Size, compressor type and refrigerant drive the price. On a system older than about 10–12 years, or one using R-22, a full replacement is often the better use of the money.
Compressor replacement cost estimator
How the estimate is built
A compressor replacement has three main cost parts: the compressor itself, the labour and materials to swap it, and a new refrigerant charge. The calculator models each one with typical US figures, then compares the total with a rough price for a new single-stage system of the same size.
Compressor part = (400 + 250 × tons) × type factor × warranty factor (0 if covered)
Labour and materials = $1,400 (recovery, brazing, filter drier, nitrogen, evacuation)
Refrigerant = tons × 3 lb × price per lb
Total = part + labour + refrigerant
New system (comparison) = 3,500 + 1,500 × tons
The refrigerant line assumes a full new charge of about 3 lb per ton, which is normal after a compressor burnout because contaminated refrigerant should not go back in. Price per pound reflects typical installed charges: around $75 for R-410A, $85 for the newer R-454B and R-32, and $150 or more for R-22, which is no longer produced.
The repair-or-replace verdict uses a simple score: the repair cost as a percentage of a new system, plus 4 points per year of age, plus 40 points for an R-22 system. Under 55 favours repair, 55–85 is a judgement call, and above 85 favours replacement.
Worked examples
Example 1, the calculator defaults: 3-ton single-stage R-410A system, out of warranty, 10 years old.
Part = (400 + 750) × 1 × 1 = $1,150
Refrigerant = 3 × 3 × $75 = $675
Total = 1,150 + 1,400 + 675 = $3,225 → shown as $3,250 (typical range $2,600 to $4,050)
Score = 3,225 ÷ 8,000 × 100 + 10 × 4 = 40.3 + 40 = 80.3 → Close call
Example 2: the same system at 5 years old, with the compressor under parts warranty.
Part = $0; Total = 0 + 1,400 + 675 = $2,075 → shown as $2,100 (range $1,650 to $2,600)
Score = 25.9 + 20 = 45.9 → Repair is usually worth it
Your quote may land outside these figures, especially for rooftop units, difficult access, or after-hours service. The estimate is for budgeting and for judging whether a quote is in a sensible range.
Typical US price ranges by size
| System size | Compressor replaced, out of warranty | Under parts warranty (labour and refrigerant) | New AC system, typical |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5–2 tons | $1,500–$3,000 | $1,000–$2,000 | $5,000–$8,000 |
| 2.5–3 tons | $2,000–$3,800 | $1,200–$2,300 | $6,000–$10,000 |
| 3.5–4 tons | $2,500–$4,500 | $1,400–$2,500 | $7,000–$12,000 |
| 5 tons | $3,000–$5,000+ | $1,600–$2,800 | $8,000–$14,000 |
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Two-stage and variable-speed compressors cost more, and variable-speed units also need a matching inverter drive that may have failed too.
Repair or replace: the factors that matter
- Age. Central air conditioners commonly last around 12–17 years. Putting a new compressor in a 13-year-old unit leaves the coil, fan motor, controls and evaporator at their original age. See how long AC units last.
- Refrigerant. Production and import of new R-22 ended in the US on 1 January 2020, so R-22 systems depend on reclaimed supply at high prices. A compressor replacement on an R-22 system rarely makes sense. Since 2025, new residential systems use lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, while existing R-410A systems can still be serviced. The refrigerant types guide has the details.
- Warranty. Many manufacturers give a 10-year parts warranty when the system is registered within a set window after installation, often 60–90 days, and a shorter one (commonly 5 years) if not. Labour is usually not covered unless you bought an extended labour plan. Check registration before deciding.
- Why it failed. Compressors rarely die of old age alone. Low charge from a leak, a failed capacitor, dirty coils, or liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor are common root causes, and they must be fixed too or the new compressor will fail the same way.
- Efficiency. A new compressor restores the old unit's original efficiency, not today's. A new system rated at a higher SEER2 can cut cooling costs; the AC running cost calculator shows what that is worth for you.
Confirming the compressor really failed
Before paying for a compressor, make sure that is the problem. Many apparent compressor failures are a failed capacitor, a contactor, a tripped internal overload from a dirty coil, or a power problem. A thorough diagnosis typically includes:
- Checking supply voltage at the unit and the condition of the contactor.
- Testing the run capacitor in microfarads against its rating.
- Letting a hot compressor cool if its internal overload has tripped, then retrying.
- Measuring winding resistance between the common, start and run terminals, and a megohm test from each winding to ground.
- Checking whether the compressor pumps: suction and discharge pressures with the unit running.
- An acid test of the oil or refrigerant after a burnout, which decides whether extra clean-up is needed.
Compressor diagnosis involves 240 V circuits, stored capacitor charge and pressurised refrigerant. Refrigerant may only be recovered and charged by an EPA Section 608 certified technician. If the outdoor breaker keeps tripping, read AC breaker keeps tripping before resetting it again.
What the replacement involves
A compressor swap is a full refrigeration job, usually taking a technician most of a day. The refrigerant is recovered, the old compressor is unbrazed and removed, and the new one is brazed in with nitrogen flowing to stop scale forming inside the pipes. A new liquid-line filter drier goes in, and after a burnout often a suction-line drier as well. The capacitor and contactor are usually replaced at the same time. The system is pressure-tested, evacuated to a deep vacuum (commonly 500 microns or lower) and recharged by weight, then the charge is fine-tuned with superheat or subcooling.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth replacing the compressor on a 10-year-old AC?
It can be if the compressor is under parts warranty and the rest of the system is in good shape. Out of warranty, with a repair over roughly a third of the cost of a new system, many owners are better off replacing.
Does the AC warranty cover compressor labour?
Usually not. Standard manufacturer warranties cover the part; labour, refrigerant and materials are typically paid by the owner unless an extended labour warranty was purchased.
How long does a compressor replacement take?
Typically four to eight hours of work once the part is on hand. Getting a warranty compressor shipped can add several days.
Can I put a new refrigerant in my old R-22 system?
Some alternative refrigerants can be used in R-22 systems with changes, but capacity and efficiency often drop and component compatibility must be checked. For a failed compressor on an R-22 system, replacement is usually the better choice.
